Our new WordPress Visual Shortcodes Plugin will let you use all our shortcodes detached from a specific WordPress Theme.

Being able to use shortcodes in any theme is good, but it gets even better. Shortcodes generally look like this: [shortcode]Your Content[/shortcode]. Most theme authors want you to learn this individual taxonomy by heart, or look it up in the documentation. That’s why shortcodes are often provided by theme authors, but seldom used by publishers.

This plugin makes a difference. Beyond saving you time, shortcodes become fun. Especially the built-in editor buttons make your life much easier. Decide which shortcode you need, click the corresponding button, and the code will be inserted for you. That’s it.

You can use this plugin together with any WordPress Theme you like. It will also work with non-KarmaThemes Themes, so to speak. We thought this would be a great opportunity for all who want to keep using their design on established websites while using shortcodes for advanced publishing.

Showcasing is Jay’s favorite thing to do. Create a portfolio simply by assigning posts to specific categories, the featured images of this posts will automatically get pulled into fancy image scrollers. Clicking on the images takes you to the item details page (i.e. the full post you just created) where you can add a description, other images or testimonials of your clients.

The portfolio is only one of the five fantastic page templates that come with the theme:

• CV: people want to know about who you are. Create a Curriculum Vitae with ease with our fabulous CV template.
• Services: Presenting your services in a fancy way is crucial to attract clients. Fill the services page from the Theme Options page.
• Fullwidth: You want to create a full width lightbox gallery without sidebar restrictions? No problem! With the fullwidth page template it is possible, just assign it to the page you just created.
• Blog: Post about your recent trips to Hawaii for a photoshoot, or your latest webdesign project, cooperating with Apple, or did you do a manicure on Madonna? Tell the world – with the blog template.

The Options Panel in Jay lets you control the content of the website from top to bottom. Everything you cannot enter via post/page edit view you can edit in the Theme Options Panel. Change the header parts that say “Hi, my name is…” and the text below. Change the introduction text on the portfolio page, the copyright in the footer, the imprint link and enter your email address to make use of the built in and working contact forms in the downslider and the footer.

You probably know that plugins are one of the best things around WordPress. There’s a fabulous free one available for localized themes and plugins, and this tutorial will teach you how to use it. The plugin is called Codestyling Localization. Try it, it’s really easy!

The written tutorial

Step 01 – Install the plugin

Go to wp-admin > Plugins > Add New and enter Codestyling Localization. Install and activate the plugin with two klicks.

Step 02 – Where to find the plugin

As it’s a translation tool, you will find it in wp-admin > Tools.

Step 03 – Locate the theme or plugin to translate

Look through the list or filter it using the links on top of the “Localization” page.

Step 04 – Find our active Theme

The list contains all translatable themes and plugins. The currently activated theme will have a light green background.

Step 05 – Add/Edit a language file

Adding or editing languages is pretty self-explaining. If you want to add a new language click on “Add new language”. A popup will open asking you which language you would like to create. This is essential for the right translation file to get pulled by your WP installation.

Attention: Now the “Rescan” link needs to be clicked once. Hit “scan now” to start the scan. By doing that, the plugin looks through the theme or plugin files and discovers any translatable string.

If you translate one of our themes, you will see the German language file already available. If you want to edit the file simply click on “Edit” on the right side of the green bar. No need for a rescan, but it won’t do any harm either.

Step 06 – Happy Translating!

Click “Edit” and a list of all the translatable strings will show up, ready to be edited. To start the translation process, you’ll have to call a string with the “Edit”-link in the list column “Actions”.

Translate the phrases by yourself or use the Google Translation, which nowadays delivers pretty good automatic translations. With a bit of tweaking here and there the translation will be done in no time.

Step 07 – Generate the .mo File

All words and phrases translated? Then it’s time to generate the .mo file. Sounds complicated? It isn’t. Just hit “generate mo-file” on top of the translation screen. Done!

The .mo-File is essential for a working localization. You’ll discover a green .mo button in the file languages list if it exists and a white button if it does not.

Step 08 – WordPress in your language

If you did not install WordPress in your language in the first place, the translation will not work just by translating themes or plugins. WordPress always uses the language code in the wp-config.php-file of your WordPress installation. Change it manually by entering the language code to the wp-config.php file in the WordPress installation root folder. If you have never done this before, please read this tutorial.
